Andrew asks MTCES parents
“Are you Smarter than
a Seventh Grader?”
Seventh grader Andrew turned to a television hit for inspiration when he work on his science fair project. He borrowed a page from the Fox tv show “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?” and stepped into Jeff Foxworthy’s role.
“I wanted to find out who would do better on a kids test—a kid or an adult,” he explained. “I thought it would be cool to see if parents were smarter than a seventh grader, and give them a middle school test.” He found a website offering standardized tests, and used the California test as his resource for building his test. The test was sent to all the MTCES families, and he received 150 responses.
He now understands why some parents don’t help with homework; “Only a few parents earned a perfect score; some parents were strong in language arts, some were strong in math.” Andrew was surprised by the results; “I thought adults would do better.” While he did not take the test, since the sample had the answers, he admits that it was a challenge, even to seventh graders; “I probably would have missed a few.”
To learn how the adults fared, visit the MTCES Science Fair on Saturday, February 13th in the Sister Anne Center. The event runs from 8 a.m. until 12 noon, and is open to the public.
Student-lead effort raising monies for Haiti
On Thursday, January 28, under the guidance of three MTCES fourth graders, Tessa, Katie and Ellie, MTCES held a bake sale to raise monies for Haitian relief efforts. The bake sale raised one thousand dollars; we are proud of the three young women who had the idea, developed it and ran the bake sale, and our school for supporting it.
