Sixth grade celebrates
the Epiphany at the Cathedral Basilica
The MTCES sixth grade classes celebrated the Epiphany by visiting the St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky. The classes visited this historical site on January 6th for mass and a tour. During the tour, the students learned about the historic site’s history, its construction and how it became a basilica.
First graders discover the joys of authorship
Students at MTCES often have authors visit their classes. Mrs. Bauer’s first grade class had an unusual author visit, in which they served as both the audience and the author.
Mrs. Beth Bauer decided to build upon the regular writer’s workshop that is part of the first grade curriculum and have her students write a book. “I thought I would give it a try, and it turned out great,” she remarked, adding “I thought it would give the kids a great opportunity, and get them excited about writing if they could see their final work in hardcover.”
Because first graders are beginning writers, “it was a bit more challenging,” Bauer admits. “We decided to entitle it First Grade Prayer of Thanks. Using that theme, each child started their work with “Dear God” then wrote about what they are thankful for. And each child provided the illustration; when you open the book, the left side is their illustration, and the right side is their letter.”
To celebrate the creative process, and to give students an idea of the entire book publishing and promotion process, “We had a publishing party,” Bauer explained. “Each child sat on the stool and read their passage. It was great to hear the kids say ‘I can’t believe I am an author!’ I’m thrilled that they took real pride in their work.”
