New Chamber honors for MTCES Volunteers

The West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance is honoring  a team of four Mother Teresa volunteers for their efforts. These four men, two MTCES dads and two MTCES big brothers, were aided and supported by their hand-picked teams, and the efforts they spearheaded were supported by other volunteers.

MTCES parents Jose Castrejon (Kas-Tra-HONE) and Dan Walter are among the recipients of the David & Katy Kern Beautification Award-Small Company for their MTCES grounds work. Sharing in the honor are Eagle Scout candidates Steven Bare and Nick Silvestri. Although neither young man attended MTCES (both are too old to have been members of our first graduating class), they both have younger siblings currently attending our school.

The awardees will be honored at the Chamber’s annual dinner on Friday, March 12th at the  Cincinnati Marriott North at Union Centre; tickets are still available.

The work at West Chester Family Dentistry, owned and operated by MTCES parent Dr. Phuoc Tran, will receive the Larry Schumacher Beautification Award that night as well.

Congratulations to our award-winning Volunteers!

Chinese & Vietnamese New Years with the Trans

The Tran family knows how to celebrate, and share, their cultural background with others. Sang and Phuoc (Foo) Tran gave MTCES students a flavor of both Chinese and Vietnamese cultures on Thursday, February 18th.

When their oldest daughter was in preschool, Sang was invited to talk about Chinese/Vietnamese New Year, and she has visited classrooms every winter ever since to share her knowledge with students. This year’s crowd at MTCES was her biggest, as she gave students in the second and fifth grade a sampling of elements of the Chinese and Vietnamese cultures. “There is some overlap,” Sang explained, “and while there are also differences, I focus on the common elements between the cultures.” She instructed the children on the use of the chopsticks, while Phuoc with the help of his daughters, instructed MTCES students in the art of folding napkins.

The students also made Chinese lanterns out of construction paper, while enjoying a snack of egg rolls provided by the Trans. Traditional music accompanied the event; while it served to remind the listener of the time-honored traditions celebrated, it came by way of modern technology, as Phuoc had downloaded the music to his Ipod.

Thomas, a future MTCESer, dressed in traditional garb, and then donned the Dragon costume as he led students back to their classrooms after the celebration, commemorating the start of the Year of the Tiger, was done.

Our many thanks to the Tran family and their friends who provided members of the MTCES community with an enjoyable, and educational, celebration.
