Nick Silvestri, the older brother of MTCES sixth grader Gabrielle, spent a large part of his summer building a beautiful pergola to protect our outdoor classroom. As a Boy Scout working on his Eagle rank, Nick is required to complete a community service project. And MTCES was the fortunate beneficiary. “It was divine intervention, or something like it,” he recalled. “I asked Sister Anne what they wanted done. She told me they had a clearing that they were using as an outdoor classroom, that got too hot and bright for use, and asked if I could build a pergola. Sister Anne told me that someone had donated $600 to the school for flooring. So I was just supposed to build the pergola, add the flooring and be done.” But as he got into the project, Nick found himself adding touches to Nick found that his biggest challenge was time management; “every time we started a specific task, it ended up taking four times as long, and requiring many more people” The pergola ended up requiring over two hundred man hours, shared by Nick, his dad and friends who pitched in to help. Nick is a member of Troop 974, which is based at Center Pointe Christian Church in Liberty Township. The MTCES pergola will be dedicated to his scout master’s son, and fellow Boy Scout Daniel Ferraro, who died two years ago. His memorial fund helped finance the pergola.
